The story starts with the murder of a young Frenchwoman in a flat on the outskirts of an unnamed town in the province of North Holland. She has been shot a number of times with an Uzi submachine-gun. Her husband is in the Dutch army – apparently the couple met on a base in France. Wondering if there is a military connection, detective Van der Valk makes discreet enquiries in France, and receives a hint from someone in the DST that the dead woman may have something to do with DBT. Van der Valk’s French wife makes the connection first, and when she’s asked to look after the victim’s little girl, that makes it a point of honour. (more…)
